“The Baron’s been pushing boundaries for months. He’ll try to provoke you. Don’t take the bait, but don’t back down, either. If he fires first, you defend yourselves. Just remember: I want a report, not a war.”

Hauptmann-Kommandant Elisa Vogt

The Sanktuar Guard arrived on the Lyran border planet, Neuwestmark, for a comfortable 18-month deployment to bolster local forces and dissuade separatists from joining the newly formed Arc Royal Liberty Coalition or other rising Hinterlands powers. Less than two weeks into the assignment, Baron Aldric von Vossfeld and his bodyguard, collectively known around the planet as Vossfeld’s Iron Fist intercept and demand that the Guard remove themselves from territory under his jurisdiction. The Guard, however, was not going to bow to local interests so easily.

Objectives:

  • Iron Fist: Destroy one of the Sanktuar Guard mechs, or force two or more of the Sanktuar Guard mechs to withdraw.
  • Sanktuar Guard: Force either Baron von Vossfeld or two of the Iron Fist into withdrawal.

Optional Rules:

  • Forced Withdrawalalthough faulty memory resulted in its inaccurate application in the game

Summary:

Challenged to a skirmish on Westneumark, the Sanktuar Guard took advantage of their force’s superior mobility to close the distance with the Iron Fist as quickly as possible. During which, Custos took a gamble by challenging Eiswolf, the MechWarrior piloting the Cougar, to a duel according to clan zellbrigen traditions, which was accepted and combat between the two of them dominated the left-third of the board.

Wrench and Velox flanked to the right, where they were met by the Commando and Urbanmech and combat between them was indecisive. Meanwhile Abbot and Stein pushed the center against Baron von Vossfeld, pressing him against the back of the board as he attempted to keep out of his weapons’ minimum ranges.

On round six, a rules adjudication error was made and Custos should have withdrawn from the loss of the Firefly’s right Torso (I faultily remembered the rule to require internal structure damage in three locations, and this resulted in the loss of two). The following round, reacting to the critical damage to his comrade’s mech, though, Stein broke the rules of the duel between the two and fired upon the Cougar from behind, inconclusively. A final volley from Custos’ damaged Firefly caused Eiswolf’s damaged Cougar to lose both torsos, and withdraw from the field.

With internal structure damage to the head, center and left torsos, Baron von Vossfeld withdrew on round eight, commanding the remainder of his forces to do so as well.

Outcome:

Sanktuar Guard Victory
